Abortion and Overpopulation

Rate this Entry
This was originally wrote in response to a girl who had posted a journal on dA complaining about a speech given by Democratic Senator Harry Reid yesterday. The following is quoted from HIS speech:

"Instead of joining us on the right side of history, all the Republicans can come up with is, 'slow down, stop everything, let's start over.' If you think you've heard these same excuses before, you're right. When this country belatedly recognized the wrongs of slavery, there were those who dug in their heels and said 'slow down, it's too early, things aren't bad enough.' When women spoke up for the right to speak up, they wanted to vote, some insisted they simply, slow down, there will be a better day to do that, today isn't quite right. When this body was on the verge of guaranteeing equal civil rights to everyone regardless of the color of their skin, some senators resorted to the same filibuster threats that we hear today."

In layman's terms (now this is quoted straight from the dA journal because I'm lazy):

"He is saying that the people opposing this bill (legislature that would put our tax dollars towards abortion procedures), he's saying we're racist and against women's rights! He's using that association because he has no other option but to try to intimidate those against this bill into shutting up. But you know what's even more outrageous? The fact that his statement isn't all over the news!"

In one of the replies given by a dA watcher, they defended abortion, asking this question to the journal writer:

"If a woman, no matter the age, gets raped, and becomes pregnant due to reasons beyond her own control, should she have to give life to the child of a rapist? Should she have to go through the torture of bearing a child of someone who harmed her so dearly because the morning-after-pill or whatnot failed?"

The Journal-Author's answer:

"The woman? What about the child!? It is a human being from the moment of conception, and ending its life is murder!"

The following is my response to her ignorant rebuttle. I'd like to know your guys' (and gals') opinions on this matter. My response touches on some very sensitive topics; perhaps too sensitive for this Journal-writer to wrap her mind around completely (I am unsure of this person's age and mentality).

"I am against abortion in most cases... however "what about the baby" floors me. I have been raped, and I can tell you right now, had I gotten pregnant and was forced to give birth to this child, not only would I have even more severe mental issues than I am currently dealing with, whether it was adopted or I decided to keep it, I would harbor a great deal of hatred for that child; just as I hate the man who stole my virginity.

"It may have not been "the baby's fault," and HONESTLY I'd rather live with the hatred than the fact of knowing I was responsible for the murder of an innocent, but I want you to really take a good hard look at that child's point of view. An adopted child RARELY gets the same love given to a biological child by its parents, and the hatred held on to by a raped mother would NEVER allow her to nurture that child appropriately. There are thousands of children/babies that never get adopted and grow up to live on the streets. Then there is the whole idea of overpopulation. Could you imagine the sad world we'd live in if EVERY SINGLE BABY ABORTED was born alive? You wouldn't have room too put your laptop, let alone a bed. Where would the acreage come from to grow crops to feed these billions+ not eliminated in the womb? I'm NOT saying abortion is the answer to overpopulation by ANY means (I have my own thoughts on that but I'm not sure we should get into here {but I'd share them with you guys lol}). I just want you to look at the BIG picture, and stop being selfish because you feel bad for babies who don't even know they've existed.

"Finally, I do not agree that taxpayer's dollars should go towards abortions (but yes, perhaps the morning after pill), nor do I feel it is racist. That guy's whole speech is bullsh*t. In my opinion, he's a complete moron for thinking he could even try this. It really just angers me when the religious right gets all uptight about abortion. I mean, if its wrong to kill in "God's" eyes, then wouldn't it be wrong to extend one's life artificially? Like curing cancer, or getting a heart transplant? Is that not in a way, playing "God?" Maybe cancer and AIDS is "God's" answer to Overpopulation. So then, by constantly searching for a cure for these monstrous and a horrid diseases, we are in effect, going against "God's" will?"

I'd love to hear the intelligent members of this group give me their two-cents on this idea. The whole idea of overpopulation has really been bugging me. In fact, when I was in Chicago over the summer, there was an exhibit in the Museum of Science and Industry that had a countdown clock. At that point it said we if continued reproducing at the speed we were at that time, we would run out of food by 2024, and the day, month, and eventually year, was also decreasing every few seconds. People need to wake up and realize what we're doing to mother earth. All the praying to "God" is not going to stop the world from screwing and popping out more children.

Actually, I must agree with your view. Perhaps it's just that I've never given a damn about it. My way was, let them do what they want to themselves, who am I to judge? And don't even get me started on the religious freaks who prattle on about their bullshit. They are the first to go meet their 'God' when I start taking over.

I do agree with you. And for the religious assholes... For me they equal racists. And racists equal to the rest of the scum, who deserve the same fate like those, who fell to the hands of Dracula's prototype Vlad: Impaling. Slow and painful.

Le sigh. over population will be solved in the next world war... and that isn't too far off. Once we run our oil reserves dry, gonna be a hell of a time. Unless the next Ice age beats us to it of course. I feel that we as a species have reached the peak of our "dominance" over the planet and frankly, she's sick of it and ready to crack some skulls. It will be violant, it will not be fun, but over population will be solved naturally. As far as the guy bringing religion into, child please. As a Reverand myself, i feel dirty just knowing jerk offs like him exist. Granted i am a Pagan reverend and this joker sound like a follower of one of the monotheistic religions... le sigh again. I would like to quote Dean Winchester here as i feel it is relevant. "Gods help us from all the people who THINK they are doing gods will". Now on to abortion. I strongly believe that a person becomes a person when the umbilical cord is severed. ONLY at this point dose the human gain the natural rights of every human i.e the right to live. Up until this moment, the cells are but a cancerous parasite that, in my view are merely just another extension of the mother body and, much like a wart/mole, can and should be removed if not wanted. My view, my opinion. I think that covers it all.
